what is "Apostolic Succession"?
"Orthodox" lines of Apostolic Succession descend from the four original Eastern Patriarchates, and although at odds with the Bishop of Rome on aspects of theology and practice, since 1054 AD, these lines by the standards of St. Augustine are "valid" and come to the Anglican Independent Communion, Inc.
The lawfulness and orthodoxy of any consecration also has much to do with issues of theology, historical jurisdiction, lawful election, the form and intention of the consecrating bishops regarding the maintanence of the direct and unbroken continuity of the Christian and Apostolic Creeds and the faith "once given" to the continuing Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
The lines of succession to +ROBERT SAMUEL LOISELLE , the last Presiding and Ordinary of the AIC. Inc., from the Patriachal Sees of Antioch, Alexandria and Constantinople are passed down through the Apostolic Episcopal Church and the American Orthodox Church from the Russian Synodical Church , the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, and reach back all the way back to the Holy and All-Praised Apostle Andrew the First-Called, Apostle to the Scythians.
Lines from the Albanian , Ukrainian , and Greek Orthodox Churches in the United States and Canada are woven through many of the valid independent Catholic and Orthodox successions in North America. Here you will find many connections to the "Old Catholic" Movement of the 1920s and 30 s and to +Uladslau Ryzy-Ryski and +Peter A. Zurawetzky. Both of these bishops directly consecrated ++EMIGIDIUSZ J. RYZY who was a co-consecrator of +Robert Samuel.
There are also Melkite-Greek lines from the Patriachate of Antioch and All the East from +Cyrillos VIII Geha and from the Russian Orthodox Church which come to +Loiselle from AEC (Apostolic Episcopal Church) bishops +BERTIL PERSSON and +P.E.J. MACK.
A connection to the See of Alexandria can also be found in the line of + de Wilmont-Newman (found in the Anglican Line.) There are also other Coptic lines to +Loiselle from +Paget E.J. Mack .
Abuna Basilios, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church's line also comes down through +Paget E.J. Mack directly to +Loiselle. Many of the lines from Constantinople also include connections to the See of Jerusalem.
We believe (and can prove) there is another valid and direct line from the Patriachal See of Constantinople to the Holy Synod Outside of Russia to +Loiselle from +Francis Spataro which is not through +Ofiesh. This line comes to +Mack from +Spataro who was a co-consecrator of +Mack.
There are also Uniate Lines with Orthodox origins from the Melkite-Greek Catholic Patriarchate and the Chaldean Catholic Church in +Robert Samuel's lines of succession. These are lines which are now part of the Church of Rome and many also worship using an Eastern Liturgy .
+Arthur Wolfort BROOKS who was the first bishop of the Apostolic Episcopal Church (Holy Eastern Catholic and Apostolic Orthodox Church) had Eastern lines through Mar Antoine Lefberne to the patriach of the Chadlean Catholic Church, a uniate, eastern-rite church allied with the Bishop of Rome through Congregatio pro Ecclesiis Orientalibus. His lines come directly down to +ABBINGA . +Herman Philippus Abbinga also received a line from Mar Julius Bishop, The Syrian Patriarchate of Antioch and All The East.
+ROBERT SAMUEL LOISELL's main consecrator was +PAGET E.J. MACK , of the Apostolic Episcopal Church the co-consecrators were +EMIGIDIUSZ J. RYZY and +PETER CAPUTO for the jurisdiction of the Anglican Independent Communion. Inc. +Mack's main consecrator was +BERTIL PERSSON assisted by +Francis Spatero and +Edwin Caudill. +Ryzy's main consecrator was +Ryzy-Ryski his co-consecrators were +Zurawetzky and +Bilecky.
+Peter Caputo was first co-consecrated by +DONALD WHARTON and + E.J.M. LA ROQUE. The third bishop, who was the "main" consecrator, we have since determined, by both Anglican and Orthodox standards was not "valid or regular " and was not properly elected, in the manner proper to the Anglican tradition and canons and hence, is no longer here listed or recognized.
However, as per the form, matter and intention of the Anglican Tradition, all three consecrating Catholic bishops placed their hands on +Peter at the moment of consecration, as per the 1928 Ordinal (page 558). There were also four other letters by other Continuing Anglican Use and Catholic-Orthodox bishops who were proper and valid who supported the consecration of +Peter. (see the Anglican Use Link)
+Wharton's main consecrator was DONALD W. SAINT PETERS, who was consecrated by +RICHARD INGRAM, as his main. +Ingram had been s.c. consecrated by the Most Reverend Luis Fernando Castillo-Mendez, Primate of the Igreja Catolica Apostolica Brasileira before he consecrated +St. Peters.
+LAROQUE, we have recently been informed, by a co-consecrator was consecrated by +Stephen Clark , as the main consecrator, assisted by two other ARJA (Anglican Rite Jurisdiction in America) bishops, and +Meshew, +Gerth and +Perschall from the AAC (the two groups were merged shortly thereafter).
The other two ARJA bishops were +Delgado and +Kennaugh - +Kennaugh had been retired due to his failing health but he was consecrated directly by +Pagtakan of the PICC on September 26. 1981 and he had previously consecrated +Clark on Oct. 18, 1989.
+PETER CAPUTO was later sub-conditione consecrated by +Larry Lee SCHAVER, as the main, with +H. Groce the second. with a letter from +Thompson. Details above in the Anglican Use Line. +Groce had also been consecrated by +Clark on Jan 8, 1994
